About Hair Transplantation
Hair loss is an important problem that starts at an early age. Today the problem of hair loss, which is commonly seen in men from the twenties, can also be seen in women in some cases. Hair loss, which starts as thinning of the hair and regression of the anterior hairline, may develop due to genetic reasons in men and hormonal reasons and some diseases in women. People with hair loss complaints should first go through a health screening and find out if there is a health problem that causes hair loss.
If individuals experience hair loss due to health issues like vitamin and mineral deficiencies or hormonal imbalances, it is essential to address these problems with appropriate treatments before considering hair transplantation. If the hair loss persists despite receiving necessary treatments or reaches a point where it cannot be naturally restored, hair transplantation becomes a viable option. Ethically, hair transplantation is generally considered appropriate for individuals over the age of 22, if medically required. Therefore, anyone over the age of 22 facing hair loss issues can opt for hair transplantation without any restrictions.
Recently, commonly used methods in hair transplantation are FUE and DHI methods.
Hair Transplant Types
- Saphir FUE hair transplant technique
- DHI hair transplant technique
- FUT hair transplant technique
What is Sapphire FUE Hair Transplant? How Is It Done?
FUE method is one of the most used methods by hair transplant specialists. Hair transplant specialists first perform hair analysis of patients who apply for hair transplant. Thus, the structure and quality of the hair, the density of the shedding, the quality of the hair follicles in the donor area from which the hair will be taken are determined. Afterwards, if it is decided that the patient is suitable for the FUE method, which is the abbreviation of Follicular Unit Extraction, the procedure is started. The most important advantage of the Sapphire FUE method is that the patient's hair looks natural after the procedure. It determines the anterior hairline of the patients who apply. The most important reason for this is that the front hairline, which starts from the very front or from the very back, distracts the patient from naturalness. In addition, having the front hairline in a straight line is not a preferred situation in terms of naturalness. After determining the front hairline, the open area where hair loss is intense is determined.
The FUE technique consists of four stages. First of all, the donor area where the hair follicles will be collected is shaved and the work starts. The reason for this is to facilitate the removal of hair follicles with the help of micromotor. After this stage, the area where the hair follicles will be collected is anesthetized with local anesthetic drugs and the second stage is started. During the second stage, the hair follicles are collected from the donor area one by one using the micromotor method. The most important reason for choosing the nape area as a donor area at this stage is that the hair in this area is more resistant to shedding. It takes an average of two hours to collect hair follicles.
After the acquisition of healthy hair follicles is completed, it is very important to preserve these hair follicles without damage. For this reason, the collected healthy hair follicles are placed in a special solution. Afterwards, the area to be planted is anesthetized with local anesthesia. After that, one of the most important stages of the process, the channel opening. After the roots are collected, holes called canals are opened in the area to be transferred with the help of special tools with Sapphire tips, and the collected hair follicles are transferred to the canals one by one. Sapphire FUE hair transplantation is completed in an average of 7-8 hours.
What is DHI Hair Transplantation, How Is It Done?
The DHI hair transplant method, called direct hair implantation, is considered one of the most advantageous methods in terms of both the short recovery time and the possibility of performing multiple hair transplants in a single session. Thanks to this method, which aims to intensify and close the bald areas without damaging the hair and healthy roots in the skin, a much more frequent and natural-looking hair transplant is performed. Before the procedure, hair follicles are examined in detail with high-resolution imaging devices. The hair type of the person, the condition of healthy hair follicles, the current hair density and the severity of shedding, the characteristics of the donor area are determined, and the general condition of the area to be transplanted is examined in detail. Then, the most suitable hair transplant for the person is designed and the procedure is started with local anesthesia applications.
In the DHI hair transplant method, usually hair follicles taken from the back of the person's head (the donor area) are preferred. The healthy hair follicles from the donor area are carefully extracted using a highly advanced technological device called a micromotor. After extraction, the hair follicles are placed in a special solution to ensure their viability. Once the extraction process is completed, anesthesia is applied to the area where the hair transplant will be performed, and the implantation process begins.
Before starting the DHI procedure, it is crucial to design the hair pattern that suits the individual. This ensures that the new hair follicles are implanted in a direction that matches the natural hair growth, preserving the natural hair structure. The healthy follicles, safely extracted through micro-punches, are directly implanted with the help of a special pen called *Choi Pen* into the areas experiencing hair loss. The DHI method eliminates the need for challenging procedures like opening channels in the bald area before hair transplantation. As a result, the number of required sessions for successful results decreases, and there is no tissue damage or wounds after the procedure, leading to a significantly shorter recovery period.
Due to the reduced risk of infection in the transplanted area, the DHI method is considered one of the most reliable hair transplant techniques. Additionally, there is no need for post-operative dressings or special care, allowing the patient to quickly return to their daily life. With many advantages, this method provides natural-looking, strong, and healthy hair, effectively controlling hair loss issues caused by genetic factors or stress.
What is FUT Hair Transplantation? How Is It Done?
FUT Hair Transplant, also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation, is a hair restoration method where hair follicles are harvested from the resistant area of the scalp, such as the nape, in the form of a strip or strip. However, FUT method is no longer used today due to its disadvantages. The main reasons for not preferring the FUT method include a higher risk of damage to the body compared to the FUE method, the fact that hair does not regrow in the donor area, and the need for additional medical intervention. Therefore, FUT method is no longer preferred for hair transplantation.
Will There Be Scarring After Hair Transplantation?
The post-hair transplant process and necessary precautions are among the most frequently asked questions by those considering this treatment or who have undergone hair transplantation. Adhering to the advice provided by experts is crucial for the success of the hair transplant procedure. The post-operative period is somewhat lengthy, and it's important to pay attention to the recommendations and understand that the changes observed in oneself are a normal and natural part of the process. Since there are no incisions made during the hair transplant, there will be no visible scarring after healing.
Following hair transplantation, minor side effects may occur. Swelling is one of the most common side effects, which is the body's response to injury and damage. Swelling is a natural and harmless condition, and it is temporary. Applying cold packs to the swollen area, keeping the area elevated, and drinking plenty of water can help reduce swelling and its impact. Other side effects may include redness, itching, and mild bleeding on the scalp. If any side effects persist beyond two weeks and show signs of not healing, it could be an indication of infection, in which case it is necessary to consult a doctor. Additionally, it's important not to skip the scheduled follow-up appointments with the doctor during this process.
Washing After Hair Transplant
The first week after hair transplant is crucial. On the day after the procedure, the bandage is removed. It is essential to avoid hot water and sun exposure. Washing Hair Starting from the third day, you can gently wash your hair with the lotion recommended by your doctor. Apply the lotion without touching the scalp and leave it on for 10 minutes. Repeat this daily for the first 10 days.
Changes in Washing Process from the 11th day, the washing process may change as per your doctor's instructions.
Minimize the consumption of tea and coffee and avoid smoking and alcohol. Physical activities and stress should be avoided. From the second week onwards, the wounds on the scalp start to heal, and scabs begin to fall off. Massaging the scalp during washing helps to support the shedding of dead skin. During this period, a small amount of hair shedding, known as "shock loss," is a normal process. This normal process can last from two to four months. Afterward, regular hair growth will be observed.
When Do the Transplanted Hairs Grow After Hair Transplantation?
After a hair transplantation procedure, the transplanted hairs typically enter a resting phase for the first few weeks. During this time, it is common for some of the transplanted hairs to shed. This shedding is a normal part of the hair transplant process and should not cause concern.
Around two to three months after the procedure, the transplanted hairs will begin to enter the growth phase. New hairs will start to grow from the transplanted follicles, and you will gradually notice an increase in hair density. The growth rate may vary from person to person, but most individuals will start to see visible hair growth within this timeframe.
It is essential to have patience during the post-transplant period as the full results of the hair transplant may take several months to become apparent. Hair growth will continue to improve over time, and the final results are usually evident around 9 to 12 months after the procedure. Regular follow-ups with your hair transplant specialist will help monitor your progress and ensure that the healing process is going smoothly.
One Month After Hair Transplantation
Within one month after a hair transplant, there may be shock hair loss in both the transplanted hair and the existing hair. This is called shock hair loss because it occurs suddenly. Behind this shedding, healthier and stronger hair will start to grow. During the first month after the operation, it is important to avoid heavy lifting, swimming, and sports as much as possible. The transplanted areas should be handled with care and protected from any external impacts. It is also advisable to pay attention to the sleeping position and try to avoid direct contact with the pillow as much as possible.
Post-Hair Transplant Care
Patients who have undergone a hair transplant procedure need to take care of their hair to ensure the healthy development of the transplanted hair follicles. Here are some guidelines for post-operative care and what to avoid:
- Avoid heavy physical activities that may cause sweating in the first few days as sweat can harm the newly transplanted hair follicles.
- Refrain from smoking, alcohol, and coffee consumption during the initial days after the procedure. Also, take care that the transplanted areas do not touch the pillow.
- Avoid hot water and direct sun exposure. Stay away from swimming pools and the sea for the first two weeks.
- Do not touch or scratch the transplanted area by hand.
- Minimize stress levels.
- Avoid getting your hair wet in the first two days following the procedure.
- Minimize your consumption of salt.
- Let the scabs fall off naturally, and gently massage the scalp if necessary.
- Try sleeping on your back to minimize swelling.
- Support the healing process with vitamins and minerals recommended by the doctor.
- Follow the doctor's prescription for medications and solutions regularly, as per the instructions provided.
- Understand that some hair shedding is normal, and there is no need to panic
- Protect the transplanted area from rain.
- Choose comfortable, easy-to-wear clothing.
- Hair can be cut after a certain period, but shaving the hair is not recommended.
By following these post-hair transplant care guidelines, patients can enhance the success of their procedure and achieve healthy hair growth.
Differences Between FUE and DHI Hair Transplantation
After learning about the FUE technique and DHI method in general terms, here are the differences between FUE and DHI hair transplantation that the hair transplant candidate should know before the procedure:
- Application Methods: FUE and DHI hair transplant techniques have different application methods.
- Number of Grafts: In FUE technique, the grafts collected in a single session are more , whereas in DHI technique is less.
- Healing Time: The recovery time for DHI technique is shorter compared to the FUE technique.
- Area of Application: FUE technique aims for a wider area of hair transplantation, while DHI method targets a denser area.
- Hair Shaving: In the FUE technique, the entire hair needs to be shaved, whereas in the DHI method, only the donor area (back of the head) is shaved, and the recipient area (where transplantation will be performed) is not shaved.
- Procedure Duration: FUE hair transplantation takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, while the DHI technique takes longer.
By being aware of these differences, hair transplant candidates can make informed decisions about which technique suits their individual needs best.
What Is Hair Transplantation Crust?
Hair transplant crust shedding is the natural process of the crusts formed in the areas where hair follicles are implanted after a hair transplant. During the hair transplant procedure, small scabs form on the skin, which is a normal part of the healing process. These scabs usually fall off on their own within a few weeks. The crusts are a result of the skin's natural reaction during the healing of the implanted hair follicles. The process of hair transplant crust shedding helps facilitate the healthy growth and development of the newly transplanted hair.
The crusting that occurs on the 11th day after hair transplantation means the healing of the wounds formed after the intervention. It is an extremely common and at the same time a process that does not cause concern. After hair transplantation, normal washing should be done every day for 11 days without interruption. On the 11th day, casting washing is performed.
After a Hair Transplant, Special Care is Required to Ensure the Best Healing and Growth of the Transplanted Hair. Here Are Some Key Points for Special Hair Wash After a Hair Transplant:
Before washing, a large amount of softening lotion should be applied to the transplanted area, this lotion should reach all the roots of the hair and wait an average of 25 minutes.
The purpose of using these softening lotions before washing is to soften the crusts thoroughly. Thus, the crusts will be removed without damaging the transplanted hair follicles.
While applying the lotion, no rubbing motion is made, apply an adequate amount of lotion over the transplanted area and distribute it evenly. To ensure the lotion reaches all the hair roots, gently massage the relevant areas.
After 25 minutes of application of the lotion, the crusts will be softened. At the end of the period, the lotion is cleaned using warm water.
After the lotion on the skin is cleaned, some shampoo is poured into an area that has not been planted and foams in this area. After foaming occurs, the foams formed are also delivered to the planting area. Again, avoiding rubbing movements, the planting area is cleaned with light movements. and rinsed with lukewarm water.
After the washing process is over, the drying process is done with the help of a soft towel. Here, too, the thing to be careful about is not to rub the towel against the scalp. You only need to put the towel on your hair and dry it in the form of a light tampon.
Not all crusts are cleaned immediately after the special wash. For this reason, do not make a futile effort to pass all your shells. These shells will be cleaned a little after each wash and when the required time is up, there will be no trace of the shells.
Why Does Crusting Occur After Hair Transplantation?
Crusting occurs after hair transplantation due to two main factors. Firstly, during the hair transplant procedure, small channels are created on the scalp to implant the hair follicles, which can result in minor bleeding. The blood naturally coagulates, forming scabs as part of the healing process. Just like any other wound, the scalp forms a crust to protect and heal itself.
Therefore, the crusting observed after hair transplantation is a normal part of the recovery process. It is the body's way of safeguarding the healing areas and promoting tissue repair. As time passes, these scabs will naturally fall off, allowing the newly transplanted hair follicles to grow and thrive.
